… with an album that is very well produced and full sounding. Perhaps not as dynamic and theme based as 'In Vox Excelso', but still a great listen for those of you with open ears and open minds. Surprise package of the 2009 year for me so far.. Rating 85/100

Schon beachtlich, was die Mühlheimer TOJA auf Ihrer selbstproduzierten CD so abliefern. Der fett produzierte, ganz leicht proggig angehauchte Bombastrock des Trios erinnert mich stilistisch an eine Kreuzung aus Magnum, Kamelot und Pink Floyd, was sich durchaus auch auf die Qualität der elf vertretenen Songs bezieht. Das instrumentale Titelstück, pompöse Kompositionen wie ‚Emotions’ oder der Rausschmeisser ‚Requiem’ hinterlassen Gänsehaut pur und das sichere Gefühl, dass es nicht lange dauern dürfte, bis diverse größere Labels an die Tür der Jungs klopfen. A surprise from Germany, out of nowhere actually this landed on my desk. A sure 80s melodic rock gem from an unknown band, but is actually the 2nd CD of TOJA. I never heard their first, but will surely have to check out soon, because this is a great record, which has a huge sound, thanks to the production by ROKO guitarist Marc Bugnard. The sound is pure ZENO at times, although URIAH HEEP also comes to mind here and there. The band’s lead singer Tommy Rinn (ex-SYDER, who are remembered for releasing a great melodic rockalbum many years ago) is a very strong high pitched lead singer, who sounds a lot like the URIAH HEEP singer BERNIE SHAW mixed with JOHN LAWTON. Like I already mentioned, the music is just pure ZENO and it really took me by surprise a few times while listening to the CD, because songs like “Belfast”, “Father” and “Help me” are huge melodic rock anthems. A sure hit if you like ZENO, ROKO, ZERO, URIAH HEEP, SIN… The CD is available through: http://www.targetrecords.de(Points: 8.3 out of 10)

After the gold flood of the Germans at the Olympics I´m happy with SILVER this time! As their debut was sensational but a “CDR from band”, some collectors avoided it. But the 2 nd album is silver pressed! And they even topped “First step”! The production is perfect (ROKO guitarist Marc Bugnard did a great job in his LFT studios) and who (like me) is a friend of 80ties Melodic Rock with lots of keys and very good guitars, CAN`T AVOID this album! In a nice talk with the very variable singer Tommy Rinn (classical singing education, you can hear it even on the telephone) I learned, that he was singer in the legendary band Syder (“May Night”an eBay high price item) but had to leave the band after a struggle. Lucky for TOJA and for us as customers! These 9 extraordinary, mostly autobiographic songs rises every music lover´s heartbeat. You might compare the music to the bands who inspired the guys: Whitesnake, Deep Purple („J.J., you are the next Jon Lord!“), for me there are parallels to Robby Valentine due to the fantasic chorals and keyboards. “The spirit of TOJA” is even like Dream Evil. Listen to the bass of “Help me”, the 3 octaves singing of the epic acoustic ballad “Requiem”, the incredible refrain of “Belfast”, the emotional piano of “Emotions” or the choral, keys and the screaming hard guitar of the opener “Killed by ignorance”, you will find some positive in every song of this “Top Album of this catalogue”. YOU HAVE THE DUTY TO BUY THIS ALBUM!

“First Step“ war das erste Lebenszeichen der deutschen Truppe ToJA. War der Einstand noch eine CD-R, so haben wir es hier mit einem regulären Silberling zu tun. Das Trio um Shouter Tommy Rinn hat hierbei eine äußerst abwechslungsreiche Platte herausgebracht, die in den LFT-Studios vom ehemaligen ROKO-Klampfer Marc Bugnard auf hohem Niveau gemastert wurde. Dabei sind ToJA sehr mannigfaltig und bringen von schnelleren Heavy-Hymnen über bombastische Tracks bis hin zu balladesken Sachen einfach alles. “Killed by Ignorance“, “Belfast“, “The Spirit of ToJA“, “Help me“, “Requiem“ – es gibt einfach keinen Ausfall. Ich weigere mich irgendwelche Bands als Einflüsse anzugeben, da dies der Sache einfach nicht gerecht wird. ToJA sind nämlich extrem variantenreich, wobei sich durch “The Spirit of ...“ ein roter Faden zieht. Meine Güte, was haben wir da für ein faszinierendes Juwel in deutschen Landen. Wer es entdeckt, wird sein Leben lang Freude an diesem Rock-Edelstein haben.Review to "First Step" from Japan:

TOJA– THE SPIRIT OF… (2006 – durée : 50'07" – 11 morceaux)
Quand j'ai réceptionné ce cd et que j'ai vu le look de ce trio (cheveux courts, regards fermés), je m'attendais au pire, mais comme ce skeud m'avait été expédié par Target Records et connaissant la qualité des groupes présents sur ce label, mon inquiétude a commencé à s'estomper pour disparaître totalement à l'écoute de la musique de ce combo qui se situe dans un créneau métal mélodique entre Roko et Mydra. Après un premier album "The First Steep" qui a bien marché dans plusieurs pays (Allemagne, Danemark, République Tchèque, …), à tel point que l'album a du être pressé à trois reprises, "The Spirit Of…" est le deuxième opus de ce groupe dont la musique se caractérise par de belles ballades ("Emotions", "Requiem"), mais aussi de morceaux plus énergiques, un brin épique ("Remember"), le tout enrobé dans une production nickel fruit du travail de Marc Bugnard, guitariste de Roko. Le trio a enregistré tout les instruments (guitares électriques et acoustiques, batterie, basse, …) avec une mention spéciale pour J.J. aux claviers dont le son possède un côté eighties tout en étant moderne. Grâce à sa manière très variée de proposer sa musique, puisqu'on l'on aborde aussi bien des rivages heavy, hard, soft avec même des titres instrumentaux, (The Spirit Of Toja, …), Toja a réussi à rendre son album très plaisant à l'écoute. Manchmal muss man nur ein bisschen im Untergrund suchen (oder darauf aufmerksam gemacht werden ... Gruß an Robert) und siehe da: es gibt durchaus talentierte Bands, die noch nicht bei den gängigen Plattenlabels unter Vertrag sind und dementsprechend garantiert die Art von Musik machen können, die sie auch wirklich spielen möchten. Bei ToJA ist das eine ganz interessante Mischung. Einmal beziehen die Jungs ihre Einflüsse vom Hard Rock aus den späten 70er Jahren bei Bands wie Deep Purple oder Rainbow und mixen dies aber mit einer zeitgemäßen, bombastischen Komponente á la Asia. Das Ergebnis kann sich hören lassen: Die Songs sind komplex und überlegt strukturiert, decken das komplette Spektrum von balladesken Parts bis hin zu knalligen Metalparts ab und zeichnen sich allesamt durch eine hervorragende Instrumentierung aus, was sich wie ein roter Faden durch das komplette Album zieht. Auch für die Produktion hat man mit Roko-Gitarrist Marc Bugnard einen kompetenten Mann an der Seite gehabt.
Doch leider kommt noch ein kleines Aber: Der Gesang von Sänger Tommy kann nicht ganz mit der Klasse der Songs mithalten. Trotzdem: Hier ist Potential vorhanden und dieser Band sollte man eine Chance geben.

This is the second album from the German band ToJa, and it's a quite well-produced set of classic hard rock in the vein of Deep Purple, Rainbow and even Judas Priest. The band's label doesn't save on superlatives in the accompanying press blurb, and while this isn't that bad, the songs do not "raise every music lover's heartbeat"...
This is one of those albums that you can play over and over again, yet it'd be damn hard to hum a single melody afterwards. Right now as I write this, the last song just ended, and by looking at the songtitles, I can't say much about most of the songs. Well, the opener "Killed By Ignorance" was OK, the second song had a bit of a celtic theme with tin pipes or what ever "folk" instruments...okay chorus though...The next few songs are all a bit blur, where did one end and where did the next one start...don't have any bad vibes about them so they might've been ok. I didn't like "Father" at all though, but "Help Me" was possibly the best songs of the album. The closing ballad "Requiem" was ok as well, one of the better ones.

Irgendwann flatterte ne Anfrage rein, dann die CD dazu und da es gerade mal wieder eine VÖ-Flut gab, landete dieser Silberling zunächst auf einem großen Haufen. Jetzt und etwas näher damit beschäftigt, zeigt das Album ganz gute Ansätze und weist eine Menge Abwechslung auf. Die Grundauslegung der 11 Tracks ist im Bereich des melodischen 80er Hardrocks angesiedelt. Etwas näher mit den Songs und der Band auseinandergesetzt ist zu erfahren, dass es sich bei „The Spirit of…“ von Toja bereits um deren zweiten Longplayer handelt. Komisch, mir kam das Trio aus Mühlheim/Main bisher noch nicht unter. Vielleicht liegt es einfach nur daran, dass es einfach keine Live-Präsenz gibt. Schade eigentlich, denn Songs wie z. B. der Opener, das Instrume(n)tal zum Albumtitel und „Emotions“ haben echt Klasse. O.K., „Belfast“ hat zwar den typisch irischen Spirit, klingt aber teilweise schon recht nach Pop Rock. Stark ist das Songmaterial gerade dann, wenn es etwas schneller zur Sache geht und die Gitarre glänzen kann („Desert Child“). Leider haben die Vocals von Tommy Rinn den typischen europäischen Einschlag, was leichte Abzüge in der B-Note nach sich zieht. Eigenproduziert im Master of Desaster Studio zu Mühlheim, gemastert von Marc Bugnard (Ex-Roko) im LFT-Studio kann der Sound durchweg höherem Standard Paroli bieten. Freunde des gepflegten Hardrocks dürfen hier gerne mal ein Ohr riskieren (alle Songs stehen zum anhören auf der Bandpage bereit) und sollten sie noch Fans von Roko, Zeno oder SIN sein, darf auch gerne über Target Records zugeschlagen werden.

Rock der späten 70er und frühen 80er Jahre, wer vermisst nicht diesen Spirit, der damals wie magisch unsere Lautsprecher, Wohnzimmer und Kneipen verzauberte? Hier sind TOJA, eine deutsche Band, die genau auf diesen Spuren wandelt und dabei mitreißende Rocksongs abliefert! Der Opener klingt zwar noch a bisserl hölzern, lässt aber schon erahnen was da noch auf uns zukommt! ‚Belfast’ und der Titeltrack ‚The Spirit Of TOJA’ erinnern mich ein ums andere mal – wie auch alle anderen Tracks auf „The Spirit of TOJA“ – an die Band Topas und ihren Smash-Hit ‚Train To An Island’. Von Topas hat man damals nicht mehr viel gehört, bei TOJA dürfte sich das aufgrund des ausgezeichneten Songmaterials der teils bombastischen, hymnischen, aber auch sehr melodiösen und voller Emotionen gespickten Songs völlig anders verhalten. Sänger Tommy klingt einfach nur klasse, und seine beiden Mitstreiter bieten vor allem für junggebliebene „Altrocker“, die ihre Wurzeln in den frühen 80ern haben, bestes Futter ohne anzuecken, sondern einfach nur zu begeistern. Was soll man zu Songs wie ‚Emotions’ (geile Ballade), ‚Desert Child’ (sehr rockig und dennoch unheimlich eingängig), ‚Father’ (eine grandiose Hymne, die wohl länger auch euren CD-Player blockieren dürfte) oder dem Obertrack ‚Requiem’ (Kommentar sinnlos, das müsst Ihr selber hören) noch sagen? Hier wird Melodic Rock auf höchstem Niveau geboten, weghören ist zwecklos, Sucht ist garantiert! Mehr Infos über dieses Klassealbum auf www.toja-rock.com.
